5 Simple Steps to Build Your Perfect Investment Portfolio

Money Girl

by Money Girl |

This article is a guest post from Johanna Scott, the Community Manager at Betterment.

If you follow Laura’s blog or podcast, chances are you’re pretty savvy with your finances. However, I wouldn’t blame you if the past few years of stock market volatility had you frozen in fear.Investment Portfolio

In an article about investing in the New York Times, Richard Thaler points out:

“Acting like a deer in the headlights can be a good strategy if you are trying not to be seen, but it can get you run over.”

Despite the instinct to freeze, it is a good idea to be proactive about investing your money. If you store your money in a savings account, it will barely keep up with inflation. You work hard for your money, so make it go to work for you!

More on Shift Work and Obesity

By Nutrition Diva |

The Nutrition Diva In my recent episode on Nutrition Tips for Night Shift Workers, I talked about the ways in which working nights can contribute to obesity and other health problems.  One of the things I didn’t address was the fact that people who work nights also often work 12-hour shifts instead of the usual 8-hour stint.

A new study from the University of Maryland suggests that the length of the typical night shift may be just as a big a problem as the timing of it.  Whether you’re working days or nights, a twelve-hour shift leaves precious little time for everything else that has to fit into your day–like exercise, family and leisure time, shopping and preparing meals, personal and household business, and sleep–before you’re due back at work.  Night shift work is obviously here to stay.  But shorter shifts could be a way to mitigate the damage.

Do You Have Bad Facebook Manners?

by Modern Manners Guy |

Each morning hundreds of millions wake up to see what their “closest” 800 friends have done since the night before. Think of Facebook as a giant party with everyone you know in attendance–and every time you post something, it’s as if you just hopped up on stage and announced it to the entire room.

So, to avoid becoming that a bad Facebooker, here are my top 5 Facebook faux pas to avoid:

Bad Facebook manners can come back to haunt you

Faux Pas #1: The Open Ended Status

Ever read someone’s status and it leaves you with more questions than the final episode of The Sopranos? Don’t leave a message that makes your friends scratch their heads and wonder. Doing so is an obvious cry for attention, and although Facebook has given us the opportunity to immediately communicate with all of our closest friends and family, this just isn’t the place or the method.

Faux Pas #2: The Insensitively-Timed Update

How a Mortgage Default Affects Your Credit Score

Money Girl

by Money Girl |

Linda R. wants to know:

I was unable to get a mortgage due to having poor credit, so my daughter got one for me. I’ve made all the payments–until now, because my income has been cut and I can’t afford it. If I default on the mortgage how will this affect my and my daughter’s credit?

Mortgage defaultANSWER: When you sign for a loan or credit account, you are accepting legal responsibility for the debt, no matter who actually makes the payments.

The payment history of a debt is reported to the credit file of the debt owner(s) only.

If you aren’t listed as a borrower on the mortgage, the payment history isn’t reported to your credit file, just to your daughter’s.

How to Divide Numbers with Exponents

Math Homework

The Math Dudeby Math Dude |

At the end of the latest Math Dude article, How to Divide Numbers with Exponents, I gave three problems to help you practice solving division problems containing exponents.

To solve these problems, you need to know that you can divide two numbers with exponents by subtracting their exponents—as long as the bases of the numbers you’re dividing are the same! In other words, this rule says that:

2m / 2n = 2m–n

The letters “m” and “n” here stand for any exponent whatsoever. And remember that the base doesn’t have to be 2 for this equation to work—it can be anything. Continue reading ‘How to Divide Numbers with Exponents’
